This laurel variety is an improved version of the laurel 'Caucasica'. The species has elongated leaves like a Laurel 'Caucasica'. The colour of the leaf is dark green and resembles that of the laurel 'Genolia'. The improvement compared to the Laurel 'Caucasica' lies in three characteristics: A more compact and more upright habit, better hardiness and a more beautiful, dark green leaf colour. The Prunus 'Elly' has already proven its good winter hardiness: the species can survive down to -25°C. It is important that the plant is in a slightly sheltered place. This laurel grows to about 4 meters high and 80 centimeters wide. Because the Prunus 'Elly' has a very narrow upright habit, pruning 1 to 2 times a year is sufficient to get a beautiful hedge. This is best done in the spring or summer, and if necessary again in September. Although the Prunus 'Elly' grows in almost any location, the best place is a spot in the sun or partial shade with a well-drained soil.
