Keith Haring noted that the empty ad spaces of the New York City subway were covered in matte black paper when the ad subscriptions expired. He immediately bought some chalk and started drawing. Over the next five years, this became a daily, repetitive obsession. His metro drawings are among his best-known and most celebrated work.
