Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American painter, printmaker, filmmaker, and leader of the American pop art movement. He started his career as an illustrator of promotional items. He later became known around the world as a painter, director of avant-garde films and manager of the rock band The Velvet Underground. He has appeared in several biographical and documentary films about him. In 1991, a museum dedicated to his work was opened in Medzilaborce, near the birthplace of his parents. Three years later, another museum was opened in his native Pittsburgh.
